In some forms of poker, the pot is split among the highest and lowest hands. However, in many games, the highest hand wins the pot. Other forms of poker have a single pot for the highest hand. Occasionally, the winner of the pot is the highest hand with the lowest cards. When there are more than one player left in the game, a showdown will occur. If the players do not agree on the winner of the pot, another round of betting will be conducted.
The first player to act in a round is said to bet. Depending on the game, other players must call or raise the bet to continue the hand. Alternatively, a player can drop out of the pot and surrender all rights to the original pot.
In most modern versions of poker, the player to the left of the big blind must place a bet before the first player can start the betting. The dealer is then given a chance to shuffle. A player who bets more than the previous bettor is called a raiser.
In most forms of poker, the player who bets first is referred to as the “button” or the “buck.” Typically, the button is a white plastic disk. Once the dealer has finished shuffled the deck, the cards are distributed to the remaining players in turn.
Cards are then dealt clockwise around the table. After the fourth round of betting, the hole cards are revealed to each player. Each player must either check, call, or raise the bet before a showdown occurs. Sometimes, two identical hands are matched and the winner is a tie. Likewise, a pair of jacks may be ranked as the highest. Also, in some versions of the game, a straight is treated as the best hand. Lastly, the dealer may offer the shuffled deck to an opponent for cut.
